01 The First 24 Hours
After your tattoo is finished, we will cover it with a protective bandage or wrap. Leave this wrap on for 2 to 4 hours. Kensley will provide specific instructions for your piece before you leave the studio.
Once removed, redness and irritation are normal. You may see excess ink, plasma, or blood—this is a standard part of the healing process.
The First Wash
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water.
- Wash the tattoo with Fragrance-free antibacterial soap and lukewarm water.
- Do not scrub. Use your hand to gently slosh soapy water over the area.
- Pat dry gently with a clean paper towel.
- Apply a fragrance-free and alcohol-free moisturizer.
Healing Timeline
Days 2 - 3
The tattoo will look duller or cloudy. Scabs will start to form. Do not pick at them. Wash twice daily and apply moisturizer. Excess ink may run during washing; this is normal.
Days 4 - 6
Redness should start to fade. Light scabs may form on the surface. Avoid picking to prevent scarring. Keep washing daily and moisturizing.
Days 6 - 14
Scabs will harden and flake off. Itching is normal. Do not scratch. Apply moisturizer 2-3 times a day to relieve the sensation.
Days 15 - 30
Most flakes are gone, but skin may look dry and dull due to dead skin buildup. Keep moisturizing. It takes 3-4 months for lower layers to fully heal.
